My HP1320 printer is working under hplip 2.7.7, cups 1.2.7 with regular
ppd. Distribution is Kubuntu 7.10. No matter which ppd i use the result
is the same: however it prints, the quality is poor. What should be
black is filled with pattern composed of dense set of horizontal thin
lines. It is especially annoying when you print a text and the font is
small (as in indices). The printer works well under Windows.

That's a LaserJet 1320, right? Doesn't that do native PostScript?
If it does, and I think they all do, I would never bother with HPLIP.
Set up CUPS to send PostScript directly to the printer, with a PPD
file 1320 in PostScript mode (not for HPLIP or Ghostscript).
