I just installed a black HP cartridge in my HP1100d and no color page
printed. If I set the default to "color" I can print but I don't get
black and if I set it to print grayscale, black cartridge only nothing
at all prints.
Telling the HP toolbox, which shows 97% for black, to clean the heads
(even at Level 3 cleaning) I still do not get any black.
Any suggestions on my three or four year old printer?

I'm not sure I completely understand what you are experiencing.
Are you saying that there is no black output under any circumstances? But, that
you can print in colour?
If that is the case, make sure the sealing tape was removed from the new
cartridge and if it was try to get the cartridge replaced under warranty.

The 1100d uses separate ink supplies and printheads so the tape comment does
not apply to this model. One thing to check would be the "bongo pump". I
am not sure the 1100d is subject to this issue, but the previous 2000c model
had a pump that was prone to failure. see http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/ref...des/misc/bongo for a picture
of this part and description of how to check it. I have heard of users
repairing this with a paper clip and epoxy, see http://forums11.itrc.hp.com/service/...09037+28353475
for a discussion.

Thanks for pointing out what I clearly overlooked......I saw 1100d and thought
it was one of the older A3 printers that used the #15 or #45 cartridges.

That means that the black cartridge has quit cold.

If you can't unclog it, it is junk. An HP "Gotcha!".

But a new black cartridge, then re-start your hunt for a replacement
printer (as I have done).
