HP LJ infrared

I've got an HP 5MP, which has an infrared port. I had only used it on
the parallel port until recently I got a ThinkPad laptop and tried to
print using the infrared interface. I turned on infrared in the laptop
BIOS, and selected it as the printer port.

But I couldn't get anywhere.

According to the printer docs, the indicator light above the infrared
port should flash when it makes contact, but it doesn't and the
laptop just reports a failed print.

Any troubleshooting hints?
How do I tell if either or both devices are working?
