HP Laserjet 1018

I just got a new HP laserjet 1018, which is really like. I do have one
question, tho. I want to print not only from our desktop (to which the
printer is normally connected), but also my laptop (Vista). The
owner's manual for the printer says that I should be careful always to
make sure that the printer is turned off before connecting the usb
cable. Is this correct? Can some printers be damaged if left on when
plugging and unplugging the usb cable?
