Default Epson RX420 No Black Printing

Hi,
recently the ink sign was flashing and it showed me the black was out.
I replaced it as I have before.
The light went out.
I sent a print and it it did everything like normal except actually
print on the paper. It sounded right and went through all the normal
stuff.
If I print colour the black is missing.
I've cleaned the heads 2/3 times - now I'm running down on the
colours?

What else can I try?
Software to reset it?
Another cartridge?
thanks in advance.
Richard

Try removing the black cartridge and with the end of larger straightened
paperclip push up through the ink hole on the cartridge several times to
loosen the spring valve. I've heard and read of the valve not quite
releasing when the cartridge is placed in the compartment head and several
folks have said this does the trick.

If Jan's fix doesn't do it, email me for an Epson cleaning manual which
is free and no spam involved.

To request it email:

Run a nozzle test to see if the black is giving any flow, depending on the
result if the there is no black then I would first remove the cart and tap
it gently on the top four times to dislodge any air that may be trapped. If
the nozzle test shows black but with broken lines run an A4 sheet to print
black, you can make one up in Windows Paint or the like. If it prints but
with bands across the A4 run it several times.

Athough a couple of cleans may not do much good you should be able to see a
difference after a couple of attemps. Of course if nothing is coming out of
the black in a nozzel test it could well be a faulty chip or as Jan has
said, poor seating of the cart.
