Default Epson R200 says out of ink, but I'm not!

I have an Epson R200 inkjet printer with a continuous ink system. I
also have an external waste tank. It's been working well for months.

Today I decided to do some "preventative" maintenance. I pull the ink
cartridges out of the printer and injected a bit of cleaning fluid into
each line. I also swabbed out the various sponges inside the printer.

I've reinstalled the cartridges but now the printer is indicating that
all six cartridges are empty. I've tried removing and reinstalling them
with no luck.

Is there a way to tell if the printer is complaining about bad contact
with the cartridges or if it really thinks it's out of ink?

Is there any way to reset the ink counters in the printer?

Should I just keep trying to reinstall the cartridges until I have good
contact?

This would depend on the particular tanks that are in use, so consult the
maker of the CIS system. Many of them use tanks that auto-re-set at 3%. The
printer writes the status to the tank chips, and reads it back from there,
so it's the tanks chips that need to be addressed.

And, as usual, as soon as you ask the question, the answer bites you in
the backside!

I removed and reinstalled the cartridges one more time and all is
working normally now!

You're not alone when it comes to this bug. The contacts on the printer
connecting to the chip are sometimes very iffy, and I've repeatedly gone
through this dance with our C84's and C88's at school to eventually make a
solid contact when replacing a cartridge. Glad you got it going again. I've
also read that the electronics can be problematic to installing ARCs (auto
rest chips) in that they need to be installed as a set.

Since you stopped using Epson brand ink your printer is out of ink.

Buy a new set of Epson carts and your printer will no longer report out
of ink.

Note that the problem solved.

you also may need this at some stage to reset the counters - if you
haven't already.
