Staples has the Canon iP6700 on sale for $69 after rebates.
This machine uses six cli-8 cartridges at $13-18 each,
so the new machine with six included cartrdiges is less than
the replacements?

You should ask if - Are they shipping size cartridges or full ones?

I don't believe Canon puts half empty cartridges with their new inkjet
printers.

Basically, you're buying six discounted cartridges and they're throwing
in the printer.
While were on the subject, there should be a law forcing store printer
ads be accompanied by the cost of a set of replacement cartridges. I
find this much more useful information than something like "30 pages per
minute" or "45 seconds for a 4x6 photo". Both are dependent on what
quality settings you use, yet neither are usually indicated in ads.
I couldn't agree more, but it probably won't happen unless sit is
legislated somehow. Write your member of government is all I can
suggest. It's an environmental and consumer issue.
