Canon MP510 will not scan

I am trying to get my MP510 to scan. When I try from the printer menu
nothing happens as in I press the scan button and no activity takes
place. When I try to start MP Navigator I get the error message
"insufficient memory" although at the time there is 700MB free.
The copier works and the printer also. Canon says that I should
reinstall windows xp and then start with their product. This way it
should work. I am not really impressed with this suggestion although
it may work.
Any other ideas?
