B&W Laser printer suggestion

Hi,

I'm just in the process of buying a new printer, and am mainly looking
at a black & white laser printer, preferably a multi-function one with
scanner and "photocopying" possibilities. As I'm a student, the cost
is an issue.

Which ones would you suggest? Are there any specific models that are
especially good - or bad? Any specific vendor that I should avoid?

I have to admit that I'm not very good at this field, and it is
difficult to find comparative reviews of printers online.

Brother. Cheap refill toner, superb software, great functionality.

Excellent advice for the purpose.
Just one word of caution if you are planning to refill the newer Brother toner
cartridges.
The TN-350 or TN-2040 (these are the same cartridge but sold in different
countries) may come without a little white cam that is essential if you are
going to refill. Some aftermarket toner suppliers offer the cam. The process of
refilling is simple but without the cam the operation will not work because the
printer will believe that the cartridge has not been replaced.
In some countries the cartridge that comes in the printer is missing this cam.
Some other models have a different way of resetting the printer's count but
that still requires the cartridge to have a cam rotated internally.
Brother HL-2040 uses the TN-350 or TN-2040 and seems ideal for the OP's needs.

PC Magazine's most current customer survey agrees with the Brother
recommendation. They received the highest overall score for both the
laser monochrome and laser all-in-one and had lower repair rates during
the first year than HP. Canon laser all-in-ones had a better repair
record, but Brother still scored better overall score.
