PC shuts down

Any thoughts.. My PC shuts down after long periods of gaming. And I'm
not talking Call of Duty 4 here. Playing an ooold game (Tiberian Sun -
1998) at 1680x1050 after about 2 hours... the system just shuts down
(instantaneously).

Can anyone give me a list of possible hardware causes? I'm am almost
certain it's not due to GPU overheating, as this game runs solidly
with a VGA temp of 42c.

Nothing is over clocked here. (Sorry if that bothers you, I'm still
learning.)

Spec
Antec Solo Case. Asus P5VD2-MX. Core 2 Duo 1.86GHz. Geforce 7950GT
512MB. 200GB Maxtor. 250GB Spinpoint. 2GB RAM. Scythe Ninja on the
CPU, Zalman Copper on the GPU. 120mm fan 2 x front and 1 rear. 530W
Hiper PSU.

Could it be a power issue?

Unless your Hiper is really old and wearing out I would be more apt to think
in terms of CPU heat.....I also thought the SOLO only had 92mm fans in the
front behind that filter(cleaned it lately??)............

If you are sure it is not heat related, then I would look at a PSU or MB
issue. Those are tough to troubleshoot without good spares around (or a
multimeter for the PSU). There is one thing I had problems with that caused
intermitten shutdowns and that was a bad SATA power connector on my system
drive. It was cracked and occaisionally would lose contact and the entire
system would shut off. I found it by actually tapping on HDDs and other
components with a small plastic hammer while the system was on (not
banging....:-) until I finally found the culprit. It is a long shot, but you
could check the power connector on your HDD. I have never heard of a Hiper
PSU so I don't have any idea what kind of quality they are. I always use PC
Power and Cooling PSUs because I just never have had a problem with them.

Well the problem went away after I posted this message on the 7th Dec.
Today is the 12th Dec, and I had an instantious shut down twice in the
past 30 mins. Both were while watching a DVD at full screen, from the
DVD drive. My hard disks are fans were active too.

My 250GB "shares" a molex connector with my DVD-/+RW drive. In other
words a molex lead from the PSU goes into the DVD drive, and then
another molex comes out of that one, which I have put into the HDD. Is
that ok?

Is there any way I can monitor my PSU through windows?

There used to be a great program that showed voltages, temps,
everything, but that's not important now, since it no longer exists for
newer MBs.

Yes, you may be drawing too much current from that particular output
from the PSU. Leave one drive attached and attach the other one to
another power lead that is (preferably) without anything else on it, or
at least has a low wattage device only. Can't hurt and it may be the
problem.

I just went through replacing a MB on my computer which displayed the
same sytoms. Turned out it was "bulging capacitors" on the MB which
caused it to overheat and shut down.

Almost assuredly a heat problem. The question is, what is the cause of the
heat problem. You've not given any information on the CPU temperature, the
motherboard temperatures, nor the room ambient temperature. Without such
information, any replies would be guesses. As in, deteriorated electrolytic
capacitors in the CPU DC/DC downconvertor/regulator, deteriorated thermal
compound between the CPU and heatsink, dirty heatsink fins, failing case and
CPU heatsink fans, ...
