I'm still playing with my ASUS P5N-E SLI E6600, with an eVGA 8800 GTS video
card and 2GB Corsair 6400 memory system running Vista Ultimate.
I had a stable setup at 3.0GHz, memory at 400 MHz, 4,4,4,12,2T, running
well.
I then tried several video OC'ers, and settled on the ATITool as working
best.
I got the video up to 600 - 900 GPU - memory, from 513 - 753 default,
working well.
Then, I went to 595 - 995, and the system crashed, reset.
I restarted, and Vista would not start. (The video settings were set to
default on restart.)
Tried Safe mode, no go.
Reset the BIOS to default, 1067/400, no go.
Reset the BIOS to 1000/333, 5,5,5,12,2T, and got Vista to restart.
FWIW, all temps are below 40 deg C, except for stress loading, then the CPUs
hit 50 - 55C
MB, case and video all stay below 40C (room 23 - 25C)

at slow memory settings, then running at rated speeds for no apparent reason
(healing?)
The Vista symptom is, at startup, it goes through the 'green caterpillar
screen, goes black, and never goes any further. System hangs, and must be
power cycled.

Which processor are you working with? You are among the few, if any, folks
here that are using Vista and overclocking. I have Vista Ultimate but have
yet to install it. I am using the P5N32-E SLI and am using the E6600 with
2gigs of Mushkin Extreme PC (some insane number like 1200 I think). I run it
at lower timings and 900 and it is very stable there and actually is faster
than it is at 1066 with higher timings. I have the E6600 up to 3.2ghz now
and it is stable. That was my first goal with this processor. I use water
cooling for the processor and my idle temps are only 29-31c and Orthos
(small ffts) will push both cores up to the mid 50s and then it will settle
into the low 50s once the thermally controlled radiator fan kicks up a
notch. I have two EVGA Superclocked 768mb 8800 GTX cards and have not tried
any overclocking on those yet. I am not big into getting huge scores on
artificial benchmarks but did run 3DMark05 and got a 21850 score that was up
in the top 95% so I figure that is ok. I was a bit overwhelmed with all the
settings on the i680 at first, but with the help of several folks here using
them at this time I have finally started to get the gist of the settings. It
is really about the same as it used to be just with a better control over
more parameters. Once I got that into my mind I began having better success.

It shows 3DMark06 is more sensitive to memory speed than cpu speed.
I've downloaded 3DMark05 to compare with Ed's results.

One little tidbit Phil. After I got up to 3.2ghz with the E6600 and ran a
few days I decided to see if I could lower the vcore at all. I found I could
set it at Auto and it is still completely stable. That fact tells me that I
may have gotten a decent chip and may be able to get some more out of it. My
max load temps dropped only a couple of degs to about 50C. 3DMark06 seems to
load my cpu about as much as Orthos.....:-). I need to mess around with
memory timings and see if I can get more there. I have it backed down quite
a bit so I could see why I had problems getting above 3ghz at first. Now
that I know I am stable at 3.2 I can try and see what I can get from the
memory for overall performance. I believe that the i680 defaults memory
voltage to somewhere around 1.9v or so. I have mine at 2.2v right now, but
the memory says it is rated at 2.35v max. In Sandra 2007 memory bandwidth is
not bad at 7088 MB/sec now. 4-4-4-9-1T are the current timings but at
833(down from 900 at 2T). I know that is a low speed for my memory, but the
tighter timings seem to make up for it. I need to do some tweaking there to
see if I can get some better results. Higher speeds with looser timings
don't seem to give me any overall performance. I am probably overlooking
something somewhere..........

I wonder what you would get with a single video card installed.
How much of a difference do you think it would make?
It's clear your (much) faster memory is a large contributor.
It seems that Vista is very OC unfriendly. I get constant anomalies, such as
Explorer not showing any files, Windows OneCare not starting up, hangs on
startup, etc.
It also seems to 'learn' and 'heal'. I get different results with identical
settings according to previous history...very difficult to determine cause
and effect.
Remember I said I had to back down to FSB 1000/333 memory to get Vista to
run again?
I'm now running back at 1333/400 with no other changes. It's not heat
related either, as hot or cold does not affect the results as far as I can
determine.

Memory seems to be the major issue with my XP system. If I set it over about
950 everything gets unstable and MB temps seem to get a bit high. I wish I
knew where the temp is read on this board because that gets me a bit worried
when it is up in the temps close to my processor temps (45-48c). I really
don't see the correlation between the memory controller and MB temps, but it
sure raises them. My memory performance seems good at present settings and
tighter timings, so I may just leave it as is and maybe see if I can get a
bit more from the processor. I am going to make a change from the bottom
PCIE 16x slot to the second x16 (8 pipes) and I may just run 3DMark06 while
the other video card is out just to see what the SLI setup gives me. I have
read in several places that it won't matter which slot the #2 card is in
because the data exchange between the card is through the SLI cable and not
through the PCIE bus. The main reason is that the bottom card's fan is only
1/2" or less from the case bottom and it does run a bit warmer than the top
card. I can hear it's fan spin up long before the top card's fan does.
