Tried this in the asus.mainboard first but got no reply, so hoping some of
you cooling gurus might help (After all, overclocking is much about cooling
the cpu).
I'm looking for suggestions of good cooling solution for the Striker Extreme
board (with the heatpipe setup space is limited as I understand it). Premium
is quietness, but some overclockabillity would be nice to (E4300 cpu hoping
for 2.5-3GHz). What would be the best combination of these features for this
board?

Stock cooling should give you a stable speed within that range. Try for a
lower than stock CPU voltage once you get a good overclock. I use an EVGA
680i motherboard and E4300 @ 2.7 GHz and 1.250 core voltage. The EVGA
nVidia 680i motherboard also has a heatpipe connecting the two halves of the
chipset, with a fan on the SPP chip (the two VR heatsinks have no fans, but
with my E4300 these don't get any hotter than the CPU heatsink fins.
Download the manual and you should be able to get the scale from some known
item size (distance between CPU heatsink mounting holes, for instance) and
then measure the clearances. It may be that as long as you bring LOTS of
outside air through the case, directing the air down over the SPP
heatsink/fan, CPU heatsink fan, video card heatsink/fan, and memory modules
there isn't much better CPU cooling possible without going to water cooling
for the CPU.

You can always test the Intel cooler, and if you aren't happy with the
noise level, go shopping for a substitute.
The Newegg entry for the E6600 processor, has 1300 reviews in it. In
there, you can see some suggestions for what people are using for cooling.
I only read a few comments, and there was a Zalman 9500 and a 9700 in
the list. But with the plumbing on the Striker Extreme, not everything is
going to fit.
It is hard to tell if something like this would fit. This is an
example of a Zalman (9700NT w. 4 pin connector). The 4 pin connector
is important, if you want PWM control via the CPU fan header. A FanMate II
fan speed control is an alternative, if you want the fan speed fixed at
some value.
The Striker Extreme has 183 reviews. The reviewers mentioned a few
coolers they were using. The four listed ones, are ones I found in
the reviewers comments.

The Ultra 120 is reviewed here. Theta_R is 0.13-0.17. A 65W processor
will have a delta_T of 0.17C/W * 65W = 11C with respect to case temp.
If your case was 35C, the CPU will be 46C. Fasteners look like screws.
AFAIK, no fan comes with the cooler. You buy a fan separate. (To get
the same theta_R as the review, you would buy the same fan and run it
at the same voltage.)
The web page for the Zalman 9700NT doesn't list a Theta_R, and the
web page for the 9500 has a value that can be used as an estimate.
It is 0.12-0.16, depending on fan speed.
The 9700 is short in the length dimension, so the marking on
the motherboard for the four "feet" are visible. But
the diameter of the 9700, must make it a close fit to the
heatsink fins of the Striker Extreme.
The Scythe Ninja has a square form factor. The measured Theta_R is
0.20C/W at full speed. This would be fine, as long as you can
get the clips fastened on it. One thing to watch, on any cooler family,
is the design of the clips or fasteners. Some coolers have dreadful
fasteners, some of which bend easily. If looking at Scythe products,
that is something to check.
The Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro uses push pins like the SI 128 and
also the Intel retail fan. Theta_R is listed as 0.17C/W, but I have
my doubts. I'd prefer to get someone else to measure it. Note as
well, the figure quoted for the retail Intel cooler, of 49dB. That
seems a bit high.
I still haven't seen a cooler, that blows down onto the board, and
does a better job of cooling those chipset coolers. Maybe the 9700
would spill air in a couple directions (radially and towards the rear
of the case), but I've never seen a description of the airflow pattern.
