Default 650 Northbridge

I am running a nice little OC on a Gigabyte N650SLI-DS4.......an E6420 chip
running at 8x400.
In order for it to be stable i have had to increase the voltages of various
things...CPU at 1.4/DDR at 2.00 the rest I can only remember the
increases..NB/HT link +.25....FSB+.25....southbridge+.2 VCC12_DL +.10.
This of course brought the temps up.........not too badly but today I
installed a Thermalright HR-01 775.
I also installed some new fans in my Antec P160 case...in the front a S-Flex
SFF21E 120mm running at 1200RPM 49CFM
in the back a 120mm Vantec Stealth 1200/1300RPM 53CFM.
I decided not to use the Fan Duct that came with the HR-01 and instead
placed a S-Flex SFF21F 120mm (1600rpm 63cfm)
on it.( anybody else thinking of doing this hook the fan clips on then mount
the cooler on the mobo then clip the fan on carefully....you will have a
***** of the time with the 2 connectors under the fan if you place the fan
on the cooler first)The unit is inline with the back exhaust fan and cooles
nicely....Running Orthos on that machine right now.
BUT...here is the rub
This setup has increased the northbridge temps...this mobo has a passive
copper heatsink with a wavy design that a fan will not fit on...I used to
have a temp of 65 celsius and now it is 80..83 celsius.
I have tried searching but could not find any info on the temps that this
northbridge chipset can safely support.
does anyone know or lead me to a web age???
OH!! and just FYI
with the addition of all that new stuff case temps dropped 5 degrees...CPU
temp dropped 5 degrees.........and are you ready??
Orthos after one hour used to give me 60-65 ceslius and now after 1 1/2
hours the temp is steady at 57.I am using CoreTemp 0.95 as well as the
RightMark CPU Clock Utility to monitor temps...and they both state the same.
The Northbridge is steady at a 83 celsius.....so I dont know if I should
worry.......it just seems high to me.
any help is welcome

peter

First check the obvious, i.e. good thermal contact between your
nb and heatsink. It really sounds like the sink isn't seated properly.

The heatsink on the northbridge has not moved...its ******* down tight as it
came that way from the factory.
The HR-01 775 is a CPU cooler.

You don't know that for sure. Even the slightest nudge can break
the contact between the nb and heatsink, especially if the paste is
dried out.

Good point...........so last nite I removed the NB heatsink.....cleaned off
the old and applied new thermal paste and then ******* it back on.
No change in temp.
So back to my question..........does anyone know the safe temp range for
this NB???

I can not find Nvidia specs however recent AMD and Intel chipsets suggest
Tcasemax of 70C.

Have you tried stock voltages yet ? If so, what was was the NB temp at
the time ?

If the NB temp was actually 83C it would manifest itself with BSODing and
general instability.

JD............I ran Orthos late last nite when it was cooler in the house
for 4 hours. The NB chipset heatsink stayed at 83 celsius and Orthos found no
problems.
My P160 case has 2 temp probes I stuck one of them inside the fins of that
heatsink. Before the installation of the new HR-01 that probe used to read 65
celsius.
Way back when before I overclocked and used stock settings that NB chipset
was at 60 celsius....OC'ing only brought it up 5degrees....
I am thinking that the fan on the HR-01 is blowing the hot air over the NB
sink due to the number of "vents" on the HR-01.......but the internal case
temp has not gone up.
I realize that copper is a very good conductor of heat....but only if there
is a cool breeze to move the heat. The internal case temp tells me I have
fairly good ventilation.
I think maybe today I will try a "ghetto modification" and cover up that
side of the HR-01 to stem the flow of hot air onto the NB sink.

I was/am worried about 83 degrees and am still looking for some specs re
temp range of that NB 650 SLI chipset............hard to find!!

To add to my last post.............I received an answer to my NB temp
question from Paul as well as some suggestions.
So here is what i did ..I cut back on the Voltage for the NB/HT Link as well
as the FSB voltage.Whereas before I was running at +.25 I am now down to
+.10 ..this and placing the temp probe more in the middle of the heatsink
instead of the edge gve me a reading of 73 celsius...........at the edge it
dropped as well.I tried to hook up a fan to blow some air at the NB sink but
that was ineffective. The case door interfered with the fan dangling down
from the HR-01....that was the only way to blow air directly at the NB
heatsink.
I then used some electrical tape(clear) and taped the underside of the HR-01
where I figured the hot air was blowing over the NB sink..this reduced the
temps down to 70 celsius...
As I type this I am running Orthos again...its been running for 45 minutes
and the NB sink temp went up by 3 to 73 celsius, case temps increased by 2 to
32 celsius and both cores show a temp of 57 celsius.Another 15 minutes and I
will stop and watch to see if that NB cools.
I will also be looking for a small flexible fan that can be pointed at the
NB sink...I know now that Zalman makes such a think and Antec does as well.I
believe I have made some progress but I need to cool down more

I use a P180 case also but it is one modified by Swiftech with liquid
cooling. I don't use the top drive bay and have four 500gb drives in the
well ventilated lower drive bay. So, I took out the upper drive
enclosure and mounted a 100mm Antec 3-speed fan there to blow over the
MB area. I have the 680 chipset that also will run warm even with the
Asus heatpipe cooling if there is none or little air moving over the
HSs. This also provided some cooler air to the radiator and brought down
CPU temps as well. I run the fan at low speed so it is virtually silent
and does the job very well. This is the fan that was originally in the
lower tunnel but my PSU's dual fan design brought plenty of air to keep
the lower drive bay very well ventilated.

It does sound like you've made progress in lower temperatures, which is
good.

When overclocking I've always used voltages just high enough to give
stability at a given speed.

If you can run Orthos for 24 hours without error, you simply do not have a
temperature or stability problem, no matter what temperature readings
you're seeing.
