Default Should I be using DirectX 10?

My new PC is an Xtreme GTS Quad Core Q9450 (2.66 GHz) PC from MESH. It
came with XP Pro and DirectX 9 installed. My graphics card is a 512 MB
nVIDIA GeoForce 8800GT. I'm not into gaming, but have just installed
MS Flight Simulator (FSX). I see various references in newsgroups and
forums about DirectX 10. Would the expetrts recommend I should upgrade
to that please?

In FSX, the DX10 stuff is only added if you buy and install the FSX
Acceleration DVD. If you haven't got that, and it's the only "game" you
have, don't bother.

MS never really finished developing FSX for DX10, so the only way to run
FSX in DX10 is in what they call " DX10 Preview" mode, which you get with
the Acceleration add on pack as Carl mentioned.
It is pretty broken and useless in my opinion.
Plus of course, you would have to get Vista to run DX10 as well, as XP does
not support it.

I have Vista, and tried FSX in the DX10 preview mode for all of about 15
minutes, then went back to running in DX9.

Your system builder already decided DX10 wasn't for you, when they
installed Windows XP (DX9 and lower only) instead of Windows Vista
(required for DX10) on your new PC. He's the real expert.

You need Vista to run DX10.

You will then need FSX SP2 which is a free download to see DX10 and is what
MS calls "DX10 preview". In my opinion is not worth the trouble. It actually
breaks some other FSX stuff. DX10 preview is also available from the FSX
acceleration pack which you have to purchase The pack comes with added
missions and has FSX SP2 built in

I did not bother get the pack. I got the free FSX SP2 download with the DX10
preview, ran it once and then turned it off

You can get the two FSX updates here: SP1 and SP2

Thanks all, understood, and appreciate the fast responses. I hadn't
even realised DX 10 needed Vista.

All the more reason to pass on FSX and wait for FS11. Until then X-PLane9
and FS2004 are serving me well.
