Default Screensavers start out fine, then slow down to stuttering and freezing

I have a problem wherein any screensavers I launch seem to work fine for
the first few minutes, then proceed to slowly stutter and move
haltingly, until they are hardly running at all. The screensavers are
basically running at only a few frames per second or, even worse,
frozen.

I have checked that my video drivers are up to date and no viruses are
currently on the hard drive. This problem began after ridding my PC of
all traces of the Virtumonde virus some weeks ago. I have run system
file checker and performed a repair install of Windows itself, all to no
avail.

What could cause a screensaver or any other graphics display to appear
initially fine, but then 'wear down' to a stuttering halt?

Thanks,
John

Yes, I actually uninstalled the device and reinstalled the drivers from
scratch.
