Default DirectX 11 to Get Announced This Month

DirectX 11 also brings Shader model 5.0. All your GTX280 and HD4870 cards
will soon be OBSOLETE. OBSOLETE I say! :-)

Considering it's almost impossible to discriminate between a game running
in DX9.0C mode versus the same game running in DX10 mode, I think the world
can wait.

Considering many hardcore gamers are still sticking by XP (and living
happily with DX9), I think you are correct. :-)

I wonder if nVidia still intends to release DX10.1-compliant notebook and
desktop chipsets in Q1 2009, as TGDaily had reported on July 3.

Late 2009 then put at least 1/2 or longer before any
games will appear so maybe 2011 and seen in the
light of the hardly noteable diffrence between dx9
and dx10 - NO worries at all i say...

I think the world can wait indefinitely. It's great to see gamers finally
waking up to this bleeding edge scam.

Vista sucks. DX10 isn't worth the effort. Crysis is a bad joke. And
meanwhile most of the world is perfectly content playing Oblivion in
DX9 mode, and placing more importance on gameplay and design
than minor differences in image quality.

I think it's safe to say Microsoft has officially jumped the shark.

That is very safe to say, the decision to keep DX10 a Vista exclusive
has brought gaming momentum to a screeching halt much like a rocket sled
hitting a wall of jello.

DirectX was supposed to free the end user from the problems associated
with setting this card this way for this game and that way for that
game. Yet today with DX10 and addendum the configuration dance is the
same or worse with every game as it has ever been in the
past...networking, voip, input devices a plenty, sound card features
including multiple outputs, multiple displays with all sorts of horrible
resolutions, interaction with other programs all of those things DirectX
does it still has issues with each and every title, and fixing them is
no guarantee they stay fixed!

Never mind just one section of DirectX, the infamous Direct3D isn't much
better than OpenGL outside of shaders and OpenGL 3.0 is hopefully going
to be at least presented at SIGGRAPH 2008 letting people see that you
aren't just stuck with Direct3D for future works.

DirectX for the longest time sucked horribly and as soon as it didn't
suck anymore, they used it as a football and punted it to Vista...and
Nvidia, seeing as how DirectX 10.1 puts them in a bad light compared to
ATI (DX10.1 mandates 4x multisample FSAA and ATI does that better than
NVidia) is unenthusiastic about supporting.

I love the idea talk about ray-tracing and more physics...but those two
sub-systems are new at best, impossible on current hardware at worst,
and 24 months from retail no matter how fast they want to rush
development, so focus should remain on the current code paths and the
hardware it runs on.

The last time I said that about DX10.1 some guy from Germany jumped all over
my ***. He just purchased some proprietary board and didn't like being told
that it was already obsolete. The horror of it all!

I have been using my HD3870 for nine months and I just ordered a new HD4870
to replace it. I wonder how long I will get out of the 4870 before
something new comes along to replace it! This horse is getting expensive to
ride.

Completely agree with everything you say except Vista sucks. I bought
an OEM copy to dual boot and play with. Hated it at first but now since
SP1 its no slower on my PC in DX10 than my XP and DX9 config. I no
longer boot into XP at all. Unless you want Vista for anything else
though I wouldn't bother 'upgrading' as DX10 has barely noticeable
differences over DX9. Maybe in future games but not worth it atm.

That could be me ;-)

Well, if you call a gfx card (Quadro FX 5600) which is basically a
Geforce 8800 Ultra with double memory "proprietary" then you obviously
don't know much about gfx hardware.

> and didn't like being told

Yeah, I remember you. You were the guy that claimed all DX10-cards would
be obsolete when DX10.1 was announced. As time has proven you were just
completely wrong, there was no rush of DX10.1 games (IIRC there is one
title which doesn't even support any of the five new features DX10.1 has
over DX10), and DX10 hardware is far from being obsolete (Nvidia still
sells a lot of it). So as you can see jumping all over your *** was
right ;-)

Well, most people probably know that there always will come out
something newer and better, but there is no need to always stay on the
cutting edge. DX11 won't change that in any way.

Late 2009 or by the first half of 2010.

Hardware that should support DirectX 11 w/ Shader Model 5.0

*AMD / ATI next all new architecture: R800 / R8xx
*Intel's Larrabee
*Nvidia's next all new architecture: lets call it 'NV60' to avoid
confusion
(with G80 & G92 being 'NV50' and GT200/GTX 280 being 'NV55')
no doubt Nvidia will have upgraded, refresh of GT200 / GTX 280 in
early 2009 which will not be DX11, but only DX10.1

DirectX 11 and hardware that supports it probably won't be important
for gaming until late 2010 / early 2011.

Next-gen consoles (3rd-gen Xbox, PlayStation4) will probably make
DirectX 11 w/ Shader Model 5.0 really big just as DirectX 9 w/ Shader
Model 3.0 is the most supported standard across 360/PC/PS3.
