Hey guys. I'm struggling to see which of the Radeon 3870 and the
GeForce 8800GT has the better performance.
Basically I'm getting a motherboard with an X48 chipset, so I'm
leaning towards the Radeon so that in the future I could CrossFire two
3870's rather then buying a completly new card. However at present I
haven't picked a case yet so I'm not certain I could exhaust all the
heat two of these cards would emit.
Tomshardware also suggests that the Radeon is a superior card:
However, I went on the 3dMark06 ORB comparison website to check this
for myself. To contradict Tomshardware, this website states that the
GeForce 8800GT is the superior card:
Therefore, I thought I would ask the experts! Which of these two cards
(which are roughly the same price) will be the best card for me as a
reasonabely serious gamer?
My statement about the Radeon 3870 being superior on Tomshardware was
based on the 8800GT being overclocked to get a score of 6023. Well
that's what I'm assuming "OC" stands for! If I'm mistaken feel free to
correct me

Don't get either. Get a 4870, has much better performance than both 8800GT
and 3870. If not that then get 2 4850's and run those in CF mode. You can
get 4870 for <$300.00 and 4850 for <$200.00. 4850 and 4870 is where it is
at now so forget 3870.

Only problem would be the cost! A 4850 might just be within my reach,
but if I have to skimp on RAM or something instead I'm not sure that
would be wise.

OK. 4850 isn't much more than 3870 though if you shop around.
