Default Geforce 7800GS issues

Folks

I'm running Vista Home Premium 32bit having upgraded from XP a couple
of months ago.

My MB previosuly had on board AGB running a Nvidia chip.

In order to take advantage of better graphics in games like Far Cry, I
installed the video card as shown below.

I then tried installing that latest Vista friendly drivers for the card
(158.24) but found that they refused to install due to an error message
saying that Windows Vista does not support Age of Empires II Update
v2.0a

This problem was caused by a compatibility issue between Age of
Empires II Update v2.0a and Windows Vista.

I've never had Age orf Empires - so the remedy of installing the update
is a non starter.
I can't get around this issue so have had to revert to an earlier
driver for now.

My real issue is two fold.
1) there is no option to disable on board graphics in the BIOS settings
..... and it seems to show that the 256Mb on the card is supplemented by
an additional wedge of RAM from the system

2) I simply do not seem to be able to get the highest setting on screen
in Far Cry -everything is blocky and angular and colours seem quite
basic which is some what disapointing.

I'm sure it must be something I'm doing or not doing.
Having said that, I'm not sure it's not some sort of problem witrh the
on card memory in conflict with the sysetm memory? I'm no techie.

All game settings are set to max.

Can anyone offer any practical advice please -in reasonably simple
English??

Thanks

Mick

Not much to say here. I am very surprised the 158.24 drivers refused to
install. Did you get them from nVidia.Com? Try the international version of
the driver:
http://uk.download.nvidia.com/Window...ional_whql.exe

You can always soft-disable the onboard graphics through Windows Device
Manager.

@fraid this is the exact same driver that threw the error message re
Age of Empires.

Any ideas re lack of high end graphics?

Lack of proper 3D acceleration is sometimes caused by a bad/missing AGP GART
driver. What motherboard (make and model) are you using? If it has an
original nForce1 or nForce2 chipset, then GART driver support under Vista
will be quite poor. Blame nVidia for not supporting its older chipsets.

This thread reports an error like that from an earlier installer.
The recommendation is to try the "UK English" installer.

So maybe this trick also works for the current release ?

Bless my soul. Problem solved.

I did some digging having been pointed to the other forum (thanks for
that) - and the answer was NOT to uninstall the previous driver prior
to installing the latest one.

I have always previously cleaned down my system of the old video driver
prior to running the latest install.

This time, I ran the install ver the old driver and let Nvidia software
uninstall the previous driver.

Worked a treat and i'm now running the latest drivers for Visat 32bit.

Thanks folks - much appreciated.

regards

Mick
