This may be the wrong group but better the devils I know.
I fired up FEAR the other day and it absolutely will not exceed 5 FPS. I
even tried dropping everything back to minimum (btw, watching the
performance test sequence at 640x480 is most amusing) but regardless of the
game settings it will not top 5 FPS. Please note that FEAR EP and FEAR PM
are fine, over 80% of frames exceed 40 FPS at 1280x960 and most settings on
Medium. The problem is FEAR SP.
It was OK when I had my XFX o/c 7800GT. However, that died under warranty a
few months back and XFX replaced with an o/c 8600GTS. I don't know whether
FEAR just hates my new card or whether there's another problem. I had been
running the 163.75 driver quite happily for a while but when I found this
problem I updated to 169.44 to no avail. (I'm avoiding the 175s until
Nvidia sort them out).
So, it's probably not the driver but whatever it is it's just weird.

So you don't want to use the latest WHQL certified drivers and instead
prefer to mess about with beta drivers and ask us to sort out your graphics
card problems ?!
Incidentally I've had zero problems with the 175.16s

I don't know that it is a graphic card problem but I do know the 175s have
been giving a lot of people a lot of problems, so many in fact that the
175.19s have been pulled by Nvidia. It's not the first time beta drivers
have been superior to WHQL-certified drivers and probably won't be the last.
You must be new around here.

okay buddy - just for you I installed FEAR. (haven't played it for a while).
patched up to 1.08 as that's the last patch I played this game with - don't
know if there's anything more recent but it should do for testing purposes.
whacked the settings up to 1680x1050 everything at Maximum. games runs
flawlessly.
AMD X2 4400+
Abit KN8-SLI with the recent nforce 15.17 drivers
2x 1gb DDR400 dual channel
8800GT with the 175.16s
Audigy 4
Windows XP Pro with SP3
the 175.16s reintroduced profiles that work - a feature that nVidia broke
with the previous WHQL drivers - and that's vital for me as I've learnt not
to force AA or AF for all games.
the ppl who comment on forums are usually those with problems which is why
it often appears that a particular driver or game is buggy.
seem to remember I played FEAR when it came out on a XP2400 (single core)
with 1gb RAM and a 9700 with zero problems (at 1024 medium settings). a lot
of ppl reported problems at the point where the ED209 lookalike makes its
first appearance but not me. it was just that the game was pretty demanding
on the hardware that was current at the time - if your system was slightly
unstable then FEAR would expose that - pretty much like Crysis will today.
so uninstall your drivers and try the 175.16s. try running FEAR at medium
settings first - remember thats a 128bit card NOT a 256bit like the 7800. if
you still have problems check temps with Rivatuner and report back.
