Default does Mac Pro support nVidia 8800 series?

hi,

I have already researched quite a bit but can't find any reliable
information about Mac Pro (even Leopard OS) supporting the latest nVidia
cards e.g. EVGA 8800 Ultra or the like ... I'm thinking of buying a new Mac
Pro and use it to run applications e.g. Photoshop on the Mac OS but do heavy
gaming in XP through Boot Camp.

If Mac Pro does not support this my only choice would be buying their
upgrade ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512MB (2 x dual-link DVI) but I just don't like
ATI in fact I would install Fedora through Boot Camp as well and
historically ATI's driver support for Linux sucks.

Any advice?

TIA,

regards,
Giovanni

No, it doesn't. Apple in it's sometimes incredible ignorance has the Mac
Pro made to require gfx cards with EFI firmware, standard gfx cards just
don't work. Since no other machine except the Mac Pro requires this the
selection of suitable gfx cards is very overseeable - there are only the
cards sold by Apple.

Bad idea. If Apple didn't came out with new much improved drivers
running Windowsxp on the Mac Pro natively for gaming isn't the best idea
since the Apple SATA drivers just suck and provide a very low disk
performance.

Well, not really. If your apps were mainly Windows or Linux apps then
I'd suggest to get something better than a Mac Pro (i.e. a workstation
from HP or Dell), but if you need Mac OS then you're stuck with the
outdated gfx cards Apple offers for the Mac Pro.

You should be asking this question in a Mac newsgroup for the best answers.
However, The Mac Pro (and iMacs) use custom-built- for- them video cards
based on the EFI interface that Intel Macs use instead of a BIOS. So no you
cannot yet use a non-Apple provided video card.
However, it is rumored that Apple will be upgrading the design of the Mac
Pro's possibly either in November or January and at that time will
undoubtedly offer beefier video cards than they now offer. BUT, they will
still be Apple only video cards.
