Attempted to replace the stock cooler with a Zalman
VF900-cu. Problem is the heat sinks will not stick no
matter how much cleaning is done. They just fall off
after about 10 minutes. Tried alchohol, flux remover,
and a LOT of Q-tips. No go. Maybe there is a better
sticky tape somewhere ??
Something I discovered when I first removed the stock
fan and heat sink ... BFG is using some kind of really
crappy stick-on heat sink tape. That tape also does
not stick to the transisters and mosfets, and that is
why their 8800s are running so hot ... over 100 degrees
in Crysis. So I restored the stock heat sink and fan
using Artic Silver. Good results. Max temp so far
has been about 80 degrees and no more. Idle temp
is still in the low 60s.
looks like only fix is the Zalman VF100 with the
additional huge heat sink. That is a $100 solution,
and may not be a bit better than Artic Silver.
Also, I've got a new box coming in ... NewEgg had
the Antec 900 on 1 day sale, and I got it for $60.
That box will let me blow an external fan directly
on the video card. It mounts on the side of the
case door, and is 120 mm quiet fan.
What would be nice is a way to alter the stock
cooler. That big heat sink in the stock cooler
probably works, but the STUPID cover and
dinky fan prevents the heat from escaping.
I might update the 8800 BIOS, but from what
I read, all that will do is turn the squeely fan
on when the temp gets in the 70s. Screw
that !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The idea is to be able to enjoy
gaming .... WITHOUT listening to a video card
screaming its head off.

This Gainward at newegg has an aftermarket Zalman fan already installed,
saving the buyer the troubles you experienced:
I'm sure the price works out to the same even when you do not take
assembly time into consideration.

Thermal tape is the worst choice possible. If you need to stick a metal
heat sink onto a typical mosfet or RAM or other IC, you use thermal
adhesive compound, not tape.
You already use the non adhesive compound by Arctic Silver, why not also
use the adhesive?
Why did you not consider the Sparkle fanless 8800GT if operating noise
is an issue? Operating temps can be as high as they need to be, as long
as the product works as intended for as long as intended.
Rats! Now they tell me. That's the way to do it for sure. Wonder
why they did not use heat sinks at all ????

I'll order the stuff. The Zalman VF900 is the exact same fan. I just
need for the stupid heat sinks to stick. I think the Zalman tape was
just old. The 900 has been on the shelves for a while.

I had no idea. I just saw a deal for the BFG at Best Buy and
went for it. Price was right ... $237. It is a good card, and I'm
at least half way there temp-wise. Pretty sure I can do much
better with the adhesive thermal compound ... and if it doesn't
work, then there's always the Zalman1000 ... for $100.
Be aware the Arctic Alumina thermal adhesive, when used by itself, is
"permanent", meaning attempts to remove the heat sink later (for whatever
reason, like warranty) will be extremely difficult without breaking off the
RAM chips.
For a "removable strength" bond, use 50/50 Arctic Alumina thermal adhesive
and Arctic Alumina thermal paste. i.e. you'd have to mix the two-part epoxy
first, then add in an equal amount of thermal paste.

I see what I think might be a good solution. Since I
already have the Zalman VF900 fan, I "might" be
able to put the big ZM-RSH88 heat sink under it ??
That would cost $27 more, but by the time I keep
trying things, I'll probably wish I had gone with the
Zalman VF1000 anyway ... another $50. Stupid
how this is getting out of control. I looked at the
big heatsink, and it looks like it bolts on using
the attachment screws that come with the stock
cooler ???? Can't really tell. I looked at the VF900
and the center of the fan does appear to fit down
into the ZM-RSH88, and contact the GPU. I sent
email to Zalman asking about that ... maybe ??
Anybody got a phone # to Zalman ??
Not gonna work. The ZM-RHS88 was designed for the G80 GTX/GTS cards. It
doesn't fit on the 8800GT, which has several RAM chips oriented at a 45-deg
angle.

Yes, the VF900 with individual RAM sinks. :-) If the old tape doesn't stick,
most people simply get creative and use thermal epoxy or even new thermal
tape.
