Default 8800 GTS Causes Blackout

A problem has cropped up recently regarding my Nvidia 8800 GTS card. It seems
as though I can cause a blackout (not blue screen) that is unreceoverable. I
must reboot to get graphics again. I can revreate the problem at will. I can
do this by playing either LOTRO or MS FS X. While playing either of these
games, in windowed mode, I can cause the blackout by moving my cursor over an
item in my taskbar. When I do this, the screen quickly flashes (like it was
going to display the popup text decribing the program my cursor is over) and
immediatly goes black without warning. There is no recovery from this.

I am using the latest Vista-64 driver from nVidia. Windows resolution
indicates that it is a display driver problem.

Has anyone else had a simular problem and would it be wise to go back to an
earlier video driver?

Any help would be most appreciated.

I think so. I guess i'll try to roll back a version.

What is the proper way to uninstall the present drivers and install the old
ones?

Do a driver rollback .....go to the device manager where you see all your
hardware, Right Click the display driver then click properties, you'll see
the "rollback driver" option.

A better way to uninstall the drivers is the freeware program "Revo
Uninstaller" It will remove ALL traces from registry and program files.

This is NOT what you want to do in this circumstance.

Well, I went back to the 174.74 version and the problem seems to have
dissapeared.

Good luck to everyone.

a) Driver Rollback is the simplest and preferred method in this case
b Revo Uninstaller does not support Vista64
