Default Word 2003 does not prompt to save altered file

I've just installed Office 2003 SBE. Now, if you alter an existing document
or type info into a new one and then click on close or exit, I do not get
prompted to save the file and all changes are discarded. Has anyone
encountered this before? I have tried the repair option twice, but it has
made no difference. I have also checked the Excel program, but it does
function properly. I cannot tell if this is just a corrupt install or
something else.

An outdated Goldmine add-in for Word can cause this problem.
