Brand-new printer and drivers. This only happens with a few Word documents,
not any other application. And it did it with the last printer.
Got any more clues to the problem?

Only a few? Then I would start looking at what is different about the
documents you are having trouble with. If there is an "Advanced printing
features" setting in Printing Preferences, try disabling that.
