What are files like ~WRL2709.tmp, thought SP2 disabled autorecovery?
I think ~WRL2709.tmp is an autorecovery file. I read that in service
pack 2 they disabled the feature for save autorecovery info every X
minutes, because it would cause a security problem in that you might
put sensitive info in the document and take it back out but it would
still be in the autorecovery file.
But I have SP2 and I have lots of these files.
Also, what are background saves? Are they the autorecovery, or does it
just mean when you manually save it? I don't get what the "background"
part is, unless it's doing it automatcially in the background, but if
so, how do you control it? What are background saves?

That is a Word temporary file. See http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=211632 "Description of how Word
creates temporary files". Ordinarily, Word will automatically delete
the temporary files when the related Word document is closed normally.
But if Word crashes or if user/network permissions are not set
correctly, then the temporary files sometimes don't get deleted
automatically. It's probably safe to manually delete temporary files
that are more than a few days old.

Where did you read AutoRecovery was disabled? I haven't heard this. An
AutoRecovverey file uses an *.asd file extention. ~WRL indicates you are
seeing a Clipboard temp file which is typically created when you copy/paste
between documents. As Garfield noted, they are safe to delete.
Regarding your other questions, a Background Save occurs when you save your
document. It enables you to continue working during the Save process. If
this option isn't enabled then you will need to wait until the application
completes the save in order to continue working.

Thanks Beth. I get lots of ~WRL files even though I am not cutting and
pasting between documents...??

It's entirely possible the same naming convention is being used for another
type of temp file. Are they being deleted when you exit Word?
