When I open a file in Word or Excel I automatically default to "small icons"
and I want to default to "details". I used to be able to change this once
and have the changes "stick" but no longer. I am beginning to despise this
new Office and Vista as well. Please help.
I find that they stick just fine. Word, Excel, etc. each independently
remember the last Explorer view. If it's not remembering correctly for you,
then there might be an issue of a corrupted registry entry or settings file.
I'm not sure where this is remembered, though. I tried renaming Word's Data
and Options keys in the registry, but that had no effect.

I change it hundreds of times a day - it doesn't stick. It is extremely
frustrating. Thanks for the info but if anyone knows how to make it stick I
would appreciate it.

If it's a matter of corruption, then you'd probably find that it works
properly in a new user profile. It's a bit of a pain, but I've had to
abandon corrupted profiles from time to time, finding ultimately that it's
easier than dealing with an intractable problem.
