I have installed office 2003 on my new computer. My wife has it on her
laptop as well. That gives me three installs- legally, and I want to stay
that way. I am in college and may have to buy a laptop for myself this
semester. How can I UNREGISTER the install on the old computer so I can have
a legally installed third copy on my laptop?

Just so I understand this- the back of the box said "Install full versions of
the latest Office products (start bolded text) on up to three of your home
PC's." (end bolded text)
You are saying that the INSTALLS are what is limited and not that you can
have the product on three of your home PC's?
What happens if the need arises to reinstall the disc on one of the PC's
that already have it installed? Also, understanding that INSTALL limitation
would definitely have changed the way I handled this product. It was not
that clear.

And I never said that the installs are limited. I was assuming you had the
HSE and apparently you do. Other editions do not allow for three
installations.
If you had to reinstall on a computer that it's already been instlalled on,
you're fine - as long as you didn't make make major hardware updates. If you
wanted to uninstall it and install it on another computer, you might have to
use the telephone activation and explain the situation to a human being.

I had office professional 2003 on two prior computers - they have both since
crashed - I am now trying to put in on a new desktop and laptop - it says the
product code is incorrect - how can I use the product without being forced to
buy a new one? It doesn't seem fair since I did not wish for my computers to
crash.

seek for "Office productkey" on www.microsoft.<your country>" and follow the
instruction on how to get a new.
