Transferring word (.doc) files from word 97 to word 2007

Have just bought a new computer which is running vista premium. My old system
was Win98 SE. However I want to transfer my word 97 files to word 2007 but I
cannot get the files across. Have tried loading froma CD but no luck and
windows easy transfer tells my old computer that it needs to upgrade to a
newer edition of windows.
Any advice gratefully received TIA

Do i need to go to a specialist to get the files transferred?

Copy the docs to removable media, eg cd, flash drive.
Then copy to the new PC, Documents folder. If you copy via cd the read only
attribute will be on, for each doc
