Default superimpose a grid on a picture to fill individual squares

i want to play with a monoitone image by creating a grid of filled squares
with different patterns to replace the original but mimic the density of
shading

Are you saying that you want to "pixilate" a picture? Not correctly a
feature of the Office application suite, you could use an Image editing
program to change the resolution of the picture. Something like Irfanview.
