Default Selecting Ink in PowerPoint 2007

In PowerPoint 2007 it does not seem possible to select text using the
selection tool. I can click on individual words and delete them one
at a time but this is a pain. In 2003 I used the selection tool to
draw boxes around text and delete it all the time. Has anyone else
noticed this?

Thanks for the help,

Dave Fogliatti
