Default Saving a ocx file as a doc file so others can view it

recently sent an email attachment to a recepient who could not open the
file. The receipent stated the file was encoded. I saved the file as a docx.
How do I save files to allow others to open and read in earlier versions of
word?

Save as the 97-2003 file format.
