Default Recently used file list in Office 2007 can't be used

I'm running Office 2007 Pro on Windows XP
home. The option to set the number
of recently used files to display is grayed out in all programs and the
note
says that this option is disabled due to group policy set by
administrator. I
can't find anywhere what to do about this. Can anyone help me!
I found in forum that somebody solved the problem but did't post the
solution.

Is this a corporate or home installation?

Who installed the operating system? Did you ever have this option? If you go to Word's Options under Display, is this where the option is grayed out? If you go to the Add-in option, do you see anything that does not belong? How about under COM add-ins?

Sorry - I don't open URLs from news groups. If you can articulate what is happening as well as answer the rest of my questions (who installed the system, etc.) it would help.

Do you have TweakUI installed from Windows Power Toys? If yes, there is a setting there that will cause this phenomenon to happen. I forget exactly which one it is but it is about displaying your documents. It may be in the Main Explorer dialog about clearing your documents on exit - play around in there to see what works for you.
