Default PST Import/Export from Outlook 2007/Outlook 2002

My Desktop is running WinXP service pack 2 with MS Office Professional 2002.
My Laptop is running WinVista Home Premium with MS Office Basic 2007.

I exported 2 files, Contacts.pst and Calendar.pst from Outlook 2002 into
Outlook 2007 without any difficulty.

Now I need to export the files from Outlook 2007 back into Outlook 2002 on
my Desktop computer. I am receiving a message that indicates the file being
imported is ‘not compatible with this version of personal folders service’.

I have followed the instructions at the Office Online Help and Support site
at the following address: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/839109/en-us . I
was unsuccessful. I created the Outlook 97-2002 PST file in Outlook 2007 as
directed. I attempted to drag my Calendar and Contacts from the Personal
Folder to the newly created Outlook 97-2002 PST file. I received an error
message saying “Cannot move the items. Special folders, including the Inbox,
Contacts, Calendar, Notes, Tasks, and Journal folders cannot be moved”. What
do I have to do to export my Calendar and Contacts from Outlook 2007 back to
Outlook 2002? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Regards – Mikie1

It sounds like when you're dragging, you're using the left mouse button,
which Outlook interprets as your trying to MOVE the folders... which you
can't do. Instead, drag with the right mouse button, then choose Copy when
prompted (or use Ctrl+left button drag, which is Copy).

Herb: Thanks so much for the quick reply. I did as you suggested but I am
still receiving the message that the file is not compatible with this version
of Personal Folders information Service. Any other thoughts? Regards -- Mikie1

Try copying the items contained in the folders, rather than the folders
themselves. Does that work?

Default Re: PST Import/Export from Outlook 2007/Outlook 2002

Hi Herb: I was able to copy the 'Calendar' and 'Contacts' items from the
Outlook 2007 Personal Folder into the Personal Folders (1) folder created in
'Data File Management'. I used the right-click technique you described and
the files were copied into Personal Folders (1). I then did an 'export files'
on the individual 'Calendar' and 'Contacts' items to a .pst file. I thought
since these 2 items were successfully copied into the Personal Folders (1)
file, they would have been in Outlook 97-2002 format. When I tried to import
them into Outlook 2002 though I again received the 'files not compatible'
error again. Do you have any other thoughts on this issue. I am sure I am
doing all the right things but am at a loss at the moment. Thanks again for
the help. Regards -- Mikie1

Default Re: PST Import/Export from Outlook 2007/Outlook 2002

Are you able to open (as opposed to importing) the resulting .pst file in
Outlook 2002 (File - Open, etc) ? If so, then you should be able to select
the items from those folders and drag them into Outlook 2002's main data
store.

If you can't even open the file with Outlook 2002, then File - New in
Outlook 2007 must be lying about actually creating an Outlook 97-2002 PST
file.

I don't have any earlier versions of Outlook running here, so I can't test
this out.

The only other idea I can think of might be to copy an existing 2002 .pst
file from the Outlook 2002 machine onto the Outlook 2007 machine, copy the
items to the 2002 pst file, then copy it back to the O2002 machine.

I seem to have solved the problem, though I'm not sure exactly what I did to
get there since I've been playing with this for so long. I have written
myself a one-full-page set of instructions to accomplish this task so I won't
be having the same problem in the near future. Of course, If I wasn't so
cheap I might just buy a newer version of Office for my desktop system and be
done with the problem altogether. Thanks so much for the help. If you would
like the instructions I wrote up I'd be happy to share them. Regards -- Mikie1

I'm glad you've gotten it sorted.

If there are some general principles you discovered, it might be nice to
share them with the newsgroup so that any lurkers with the same problem can
benefit.

For example... did it turn out that Outlook 2007's "97-2002" .pst file
wasn't really readable by Outlook 2002? If that's the case, then that would
be really nice to know.

Default Re: PST Import/Export from Outlook 2007/Outlook 2002

The 'Outlook 97-2002 .pst' file that I created in Outlook 2007 was readable
in Outlook 2002. After following your suggestion about left-clicking and
copying the 2 items I wanted in the .pst file (Calendar and Contacts) I was
able to go into Outlook 2002 and import them as .pst files. My problem
involved the path to the files. I finally moved the whole Outlook2007-created
Personal Folders (1).pst file to the desktop of my Outlook2002 computer.
After I did that, importing the .pst files into Outlook 2002 worked the way I
thought it should. Thanks again for everything. Regards -- Mikie1
