Default POOR PERFORMANCE

When updating, adding, deleting an Office 2003 calendar entry system becomes
processor bound and nothing else can be done until the process or completes
whatever tasks it is doing. Its almost like Outlook is re-indexing the
calendar each time something is done to it. Anyone have suggestions on how
to get performance back to what it use to be?
