Default outlook 7 requires restart to open

Cannot open Outlook 7 from desktop or start menu (Vista on new Dell) when
starting computer unless I restart. then Outlook often freezes when sending
email. Started two months ago when ISP switched webmail from Earthlink to
Embarq. ISP not offering assistance. Do I have to reinstall Office software?

It sounds like your .pst file or your mail profile might be corrupted. For
starters, I would try running the inbox repair tool. It's scanpst.exe, and
usually is located in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12. If that
doesn't work, I would try creating a new Outook profile (Control Panel -
Mail - Show Profiles - Add, etc. You'll need to set "When starting Microsoft
Office Outlook, use this profile:" to "Prompt..." in order to see if the new
profiles fixes things. (You'll also need to either a) point the new profile
at your existing .pst file, or b) copy your .pst contents to the new one
that gets created.)

Please post this to the Outlook Express newsgroup. This is a Outlook (OL Office application) Outlook Express is a part of Internet Explorer. Many people call Outlook Express 7 (Although some call it mistakenly as OL)because they have downloaded and installed IE7 on their XP machines and believing OE to be also version 7 when in fact it is still version 6

Repost it here and make sure you mention Outlook Express not Outlook

Thank you for your response. I am using Outlook, not the lite Outlook
Express. Outlook is part of the Office 2007 install with the new Dell and
Vista 2007 (purchased 4/2007). this has been verified by all my phone
discussions (8) with Dell and ISP technicians trying to find a solution.
Their response has been to pay the $ to talk to a MS technician since the
problem is with Office 2007.

Thank you for your assistance. I will try your suggestions. Question: how do
I do this: "You'll also need to either a) point the new profile

Really appreciate your help. I purchased this new Dell with Vista 7 in March
07 and I should not be having problems already with software. Dell and ISP
technicians told me that they could not help unless hardware problem (so much
for additional purchase of 24hr tech support). so thank you.

Have you tried running scanpst.exe yet? It might fix your problem without
having to create a new mail profile.

In Outlook, choose File - Data File Management. Double-click on the data
file listed as Default. In the Personal Folders dialog, click in the
Filename: field and select what you see there. Press Ctrl+C to copy it to
the clipboard.

Close Outlook. Open Windows Explorer and go to:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12

Double-click SCANPST (might show as SCANPST.EXE depending on your settings).

For "Enter the name of the file you want to scan," press Ctrl+V to insert
the contents of the clipboard.

Click Start.

It will then scan your .pst file in 8 phases. When done, make sure that
"Make backup..." is enabled, and click Repair.

Once done, start Outlook and see if the problem(s) still occur.

If problems still occur, see the following article for details on creating a
new mail profile:

Sorry about that but a lot of persons posting in most OE newsgroup refer to OE with IE7 installed as Outlook 7. My mistake here .

I have not tried it yet since Outlook has been opening for two days from
sleep stage without having to restart nor has it been locking up. Talked to
ISP (embarq) tech two days ago who checked dsl modem configurations (is
sending new modem) and I deleted second unused mailbox profile. If problem
repeats, I'll try your solution and get back to you with results. I did run
MS Office diagnostics-results: no problems. and I located the MS Office
Help/How To page so I can educate myself.
Really appreciate your detailed instructions and suggestions.

No apology needed. I am so new at this, it would be easy to confuse the
varied new programs, especially with the Vista changes. thank you for your
assistance.
