Default Which Office products support .mdi files for diagrams downloaded

I need to download, open, and save schematic diagrams and text documents. I
prefer the least expensive option, but may consider others if I understand
the options. Thank you for advising me, Mike

The MS Document Imaging format (.mdi) is a derivation of the TIFF graphics file structure. For the most part they are created only
by the MS Office Document Image Writer virtual printer included with Office 2003 and Office 2007 and, except for a 3rd party viewer,
can only be open and viewed by others having the optional Office 2003/2007 installation feature, MS Office Document Imaging.

MS has put more work into its 'electronic paper' XML Paper Specification (.XPS) format for future use and transportability of
documents that can be created in Office but not require Office apps to view it.
