Default Office Home\Student 2007 - Word 2007 - HP printer drivers - problems

I run XP SP3 on a Dell and Office 2007 and a HP Deskjet 1460 both purchased
in last two weeks and installed in that order. Having big problems with a
device driver\drivers. Lots of MS error messages naming a HP driver\drivers.
MS technical support assisted with Easy Assist and advised in fact no MS
problems, contact HP technical support. Did so. Their initial solutions
made no difference to the problem which is Word not saving or closing
properly. Will save, thank God. They have now escalated my case to their
Advanced people who are ringing me. This evening got a Windows Stop error,
first ever, due it said to device driver. Wihtout warning, Windows shut
itself down and restarted, normally. Weird. HP clearly driver implicated,
but might not be. I find this very scary. Google searches tell me lots of
problems between Office 2007 and HP drivers. But mine are getting beyond a
joke. I have only the one printer. I had to reinstall Windows about three
weeks ago, when did so from SP1 to SP3, with Dell's guidance, and all OK.
Comments\solutions?

So temporarily uninstall the printer and see if the problems go away.
QED.

HP Technical Support confirm there is a problem between Deskjets and MS
Office 2007. The only effective workaround is to install a different
printer, and if you don't have one, to 'install' a different HP Deskjet, as
to which they tell you how to do that, as it is not straightforward. So
they told me how to install a Deskjet 990c virtual printer, as the default,
meaning each time I have to switch manually to the 1400, which is a minor
irritation. And hey presto, no more problems. I assume that in due time HP
will fix this conflict.
