Can I load the software on both my laptop and my parents' desktop? We are
not in the same household.

No - the machines must be in the same location AFAIK....

Here is an excerpt from the 2007 Office Home and Student Retail license
agreement.

a. Licensed Device. You may install one copy of the software on three
licensed devices in your household for use by people who reside there.
The software is not licensed for use in any commercial, non-profit, or
revenue-generating business activities.
