Default office 2007 is horrid

That ribbon is terrible - do NOT get 2007. Go get 2003. In fact, go get
open office; it really does work much better than 2007.

There is NO option for "classic view" a la other recent MS software
upgrades. vista/xp/98 can all be viewed in a similar manner - WHY WHY WHY
can't 2007 look like 2003 if the customer so wishes it? Oh, that's right,
we've arrived at a point where there' no real improvement to be made on the
existing software, so we've got to "update" everything and stop supporting
the old, perfectly usable software. I suspect that this is just the result
of a poor business decision made by some jerk engineer out to get promoted
because of his "cool" new interface. Send that jerk back to the salt mines,
and charge a monthly fee for safety protection a la WoW or something.

i do agree with your
idea, in that microsoft
should make a variety
of operational themes/views
available in office as well
as windows.

for example, in vista i
see no reason why views/themes
like the old win95 theme
(and all the other o.s.' prior
to vista) cannot be included just in
case there are old folks/users
who prefer the old style and
without all the bells and
whistles that a powerful o.s.
like vista has to offer.

the same should be for
office 2007 in that there
should be views like office
97 available and without
all the bells and whistles
for those users who don't
want them, however they
could be made available
when the office 2007
view/theme was selected or
needed like an administrator.

perhaps, themes can be
engineered back into the operating
system and not just for
the desktop recolorization.

i too didn't like the ribbon
feature and you should have
tried the free trial before
spending money on it.

Or maybe users who prefer to use system resources to run application
software rather than the OS's task switching eyewash.

One thing Vista ain't is a Zen OS.

If Vista still provides a mechanism for changing the user's shell, a
la http://shell-shocked.org/article.php?id=220, then just need to find
such a replacement shell.

yeah, but it would be
better for microsoft to
such an operational
theme instead of relying
on a third party, since
such an alteration to
the o.s. would involve
security.

i've brought up this request
for an added feature, but
the responses were that if
the new o.s.'s or software
were able to provide custom
views that were like the
older versions, then people
would not bother buying
it and simply keep the
older versions.

this however was simply
is hillbilly logic.

funny - logical hillbilly,
hillbillism, etc..

LOL! I understand your frustration. I too reverted to Office 2003 after using
the trial version of Office 2007. I mainly use Excel, which kept crashing at
random with no provocation. I found the Ribbon interface to be illogical,
confusing and counter productive. Given that, I didn't see any reason to
further enrich MS by shelling out the $$$s for Office 2007.

Since the Ribbon provided me with absolutely no advantage, I am not willing
to invest the time and the effort necessary to learn it, merely because
someone at MS thinks it's a bright idea.

Jensen Harris led the team that came up with the Ribbon interface. Here's a
link to his blog.
http://blogs.msdn.com/jensenh/

JH claims that MS conducted extensive studies of how users interacted with
Office commands. That data is suspect. Despite several questions from posters
about it, JH has avoided answering. JH also claims that the Ribbon UI enjoys
"high acceptance". Once again, he has avoided answering questions from
posters about solid data to back up those assertions.

One of the questions I had posed was had MS provided the classic UI as an
option, how many users would have willingly chosen the Ribbon over the
classic UI? As you can guess, no answer has been forthcoming. IMO, not
providing that option was an arrogant mistake. It was a blatant attempt to
shove a new UI down the users' throats, merely because someone at MS thought
it was a good idea.

BTW, you can also send in your comments about Office 2007 from the MS website.

hth!
