I have installed Office 2003 on Vista. It takes a very long time for me to
open any office 2003 program (up to serveral minutes). I really only need to
use Word and Excel. I have 1G RAM 2.0Ghz processor. Seems like my hardware
is not the problem. I have also run all the windows and microsoft updates.
I was unable to find anyone else with this problem. Any other suggestions
would be much appreciated!
Don't know if this will be any help at all but make sure your graphics card
has the latest driver and install a local colour printer driver (even if you
don't have a local colour printer).

Thanks for the suggestions Lucy. I checked my graphics driver and it is up
to date. Also, I do have a color printer installed. Still having the same
problem.

I had the same problem on a new HP laptop with Vista Business and a
whole bunch of HP bloatware loaded, including Norton Antivirus. There
is much said on the web how Norton can cause slow loading of Word and
Excel files. Since I have another antivirus program I use, I turned
off Norton in msconfig. Still painfully slow Office loads. I totally
uninstalled Norton, and now Office aps loads like they should. I'm
not sure what was happening, but I'm guessing opening an Office ap
must have somehow caused Norton to load, or at least tried to load
Norton. Get rid of Norton Antivirus and get something else that plays
nice with MS Office.
