Default installing retail copy of office 2000 get invalid key message

I have the box, discs, and product key for my retail office 2000 professional
- My old computer died so I bought a PC that had a trial of Office 2007 - I
tried to install Office 2000 but I get an invalid key message - I was told it
could be because of the trail version of office on my PC so I uninstalled the
2007 trial - but my key still comes up as invalid - I tried a workaround that
places the product key in the run (search in vista) command - it installed
without asking for the key, but when opening an office program (word for
example) - I was asked for the key then and it came back as invalid. I tried
another workaround - making a copy of the install disc and changing the setup
ini file to include the product key - no use it asked for the key at
installation and I was back at square one - sorry to be so long winded - but
Jiminy! - what can I do to install this program???
