How can I create a 5264 label using my return address and graphic?

I want to create a label template in effect, that I can pull up and use for
mass mailings and for single label use on occassion. I'm envisioning a
"return address" plug-in that I would use when I select Use Return Address in
the mailing label menu. I've created the return address with graphic
"picture" and it's saved in a *.gif format.

Thanks, but....you've pointed me to where I can choose a 5264 label
template, and apparently missed the part in my post where I wanted to add a
"return address and graphic" and then save that as a "template" of sorts
where I can use it for single labels and mass mailings in the future.

Any other ideas?

if you open a template
and edit it, you can then
save it with your edits as
a .doc file. i wouldn't save
it as a template file again.

what you should do is
to use the first label only
and think of it as a tiny
document (or cell) in which you
can edit it and add images
with all the power that word
provides. you might also
want to increase your screen view
from 100 to maybe 400 percent.

then once the one label is
pretty and perfect, copy the
contents of that one label/cell
and paste it into the subsequent labels.

then save the whole thing as
a reusable .doc file. i would
also make a backup copy of it
as well.

What I'm missing is the return address and graphic. I can follow your
instruction and the Microsoft instructions and pull up a 5264 label and then
resave it with my own filename, but the return address and graphic is not
included.

Along your idea, I'd want to be able to choose my custom label (which has my
return address and graphic) to use occassionally for a single mailing or a
mass mailing. Again, Right now I'm just pulling up another 5264 label by
another name.

Now I can add my return address and label to the DOC that's created after I
choose the 5264 label and Add to New Document. But then I can't use it in
mass mailing mail merges because it's now a DOC file and not a "Label".

well, the mail merge works
by merging data from a listing
or database onto a "form".

"the form" can be a letter like those
used for mass mailings or envelopes,
labels, invitations, etc.

the sheet of labels you made and
saved as a doc file can be used at
any time to print on a regular sheet
of paper or cardstock or labels.
the printer doesn't care what you run through
the printer heads as it will print the
image on the screen, in this case the
image will be your customized sheet
you saved.

for all practical purposes a sheet
of labels is processed like any sheet
of paper by the printer. similarly,
envelopes are printed by the printer
as if they were simply 4 by 9 sheets
of paper.

the final outcome will be that
the printer prints whatever the
image you see on the screen on whatever
medium is being fed through the printer
including a sheet of paper layered
with small sticky squares, (labels).

i think that maybe when you are selecting
the label template you may not be skipping
the step where you are pre-asked
for the return address. actually you
would want to customize the sheet
manually.

after you select the label template,
a document with a table of blank
cells should appear on the screen.

however, you may have to select the
show table gridlines to see these cells.

after you customize a cell with
your image and return address you
can then copy that set into the other
cells. then save your customized
sheet of labels as a document. you might
want to save it as mylabels.doc

whenever you pull up mylabels.doc
it can easily be printed by the printer onto
a sheet of labels if you run label paper
through it. however, you can also run
regular paper, colored paper, etc.; as you
may already know that the printer doesn't
care if you actually use label paper.

in fact when making labels, it is
a good idea to initially print the
labels onto a regular sheet of paper.
this way it will be less costly to
inspect the final product rather than
wasting sheets of labels due to
formatting flaws or experimenting.

now for mail merging, mylabels.doc
having 6 cells, each cell an image and a return
address can be used as if it were a form letter.

this means that each cell will need a set
of merge fields underneath the image
and your return address. each cell will
have a set of merge fields so that data
can be inserted into them by the mail
merge generator.

after the merge is complete and each
cell has your image and return address
and a unique mailing address, you can
save it as a document and to print at
any time. you would likely want to
save this final document as
mymailinglabels.doc

also, if you decide in the
future you want to print a single
label from the entire sheet, then
you simply clear/delete the information
from those cells you don't want to print
leaving behind the one(s) to be printed.

Mmmm. You are being so patient and so very thorough in what you're
explaining, but I just can't get it through my head. Or, maybe I can't
explain it well enough.

When you pull up Envelopes and Labels you have the option of choosing a
label (which you described to me before). You also have the option of
printing a full page of the same label or one single label. I'm envisioning
a custom label that I can select that has my return address and graphic
already embedded, and print a full page or a single label.

I had someone in this forum help me create a custom envelope using my return
address and graphic several months ago so I can pull up that custom envelope
to use or use the default blank one. So I was thinking of something like
that for the label.

ok, well i think the "mail merging" process may be something
to grand for what you are seeking. i suppose when the term
merge was used, it triggered the process of "mail merging"

yes, you can open a blank label template then modify it and save it
as a doc file or a template. keep in mind that a sheet of labels is no
different
than a basic sheet of paper that is divided up into a table cells. because
of the label style you have chosen, your sheet of paper will
have six large cells.

I understand that a label template is just partitioning a sheet of paper into
several cells and printing text where it is assigned to be printed. What I
want to do, like was done on my envelope template, is have my return address
and graphic print on the label when I choose.

I followed your directions from one of your previous posts where I saved a
5264 label template as a custom label and saved it as a .doc file. I placed
my return address and graphic on that .doc file and resaved it under the same
name. So, now how do I pull that .doc file up, under the Envelopes and Labels
menu, add a Sentd To address and print out ONE label?

labels must be handled
a bit differently than envelopes.

what i suggest is that you make
two folders on your harddrive.
Call them MyLabels and the other
MyEnvelopes.

Whenever you address an
envelope to someone, that
envelope can then be saved
into your myenvelopes folder
via menu file>save-as.

So for example when you create
an envelope to Santa and you
have entered the address to the
north pole, your return address and
maybe placed some jingle bell images
on it as well, you can print it then save
it in your myenvelopes folder as
SantaEnv.doc

Then the following year when your
ready to send another wish list or
complaint letter to ol' jolly,
locate that santaenvelope.doc file

it will appear on the screen and
you can then print it.

The process above can be used
to store preaddressed and preformatted
envelopes to everyone/anyone you
want. It is simply a matter of
file management that you will
have to tune up on.

The same applies to labels.

You go to file open and find
that preformatted label document
you made and saved. You then address
the label(s) you want printed.

However, unlike a single envelope
having only one address, your labels
can have multiple addresses

The printer will not print on
any labels you leave blank.

If for example you use one of
labels for santa but do not want
to print the other five labels, then
simply clear out the data from
the other five.

The printer will only get data
for the one santa label and it
will leave the others exactly as
you have it on your screen. So
if they are blank on the screen,
then they will be ignored by the
printer.

After you print the label to santa
save that label sheet with the
filename of santalabel.doc in
your mylabels folder.

then next year you can re-open that
santa label sheet and reuse it.

don't be afraid with saving multiple
label sheets or envelopes. if they
contain different addresses then save
them individually with unique filenames

keep the template you customized with
your return address and pics as read
only. when you modify your custom
document, then save the whole document
under a different name.

The above is a methodology that
requires an understanding of file
management. I am a bit surprised
and disappointed that you had a
question about how to open
a files/documents from your harddrive.
