Default Cursor location

On previous versions of Word, there was an indicator at the bottom of the
screen that showed where the cursor in inches, for example, 6.5" from the
top. Is there an indicator in Word 2007?

R-click the Status bar and Tick that option (Vertical page Position)

Pardon me, but what is the purpose of that feature?

I took a Word 2007 class in college, but I don't remember the instructor
going over this item.

Zoom in on the document to say 100 or 150% and then determine where your
cursor is on the page with out it. ;-)
