I have created a backup for my contacts folder following the on line
Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 instructions . I used My Documents and the
name MyContactsBackup.pst . However when I try to open the file, I get the
message that I need to open it with a program, either listed or go to the Web
for a program. I am not sure which one to use. BTW, I am running Vista on
my Dell Laptop.

Only Outlook can open a pst file. Why would you want to open it with
anything else?
You open it within Outlook, ie File>Open>Data File.......browse to its
location
PS to make a backup of your entire pst file, the outlook data file, which
contains *all* your OL data, with Outlook closed simply copy the data file,
or use the free backup addin, available from MS outlook site
