Default compatibility with old version of office

I recently installed office 2007 and the new applications work fine. However
I am unable to open any of my old documents that were composed on office
2000. This includes word, powerpoint, and excel documents. I get an error
message saying the document is "not available" and sometimes an error message
saying the virus protection software is malfunctioning. Even when I suspend
Norton though, I still can't open any old documents made by office 2000. Very
frustrating. Any suggestions anyone?

Are you finding the files or are you typing in the file name (and path)?

Are you getting the Norton "the virus protection software is
malfunctioning." message when? When you are trying to open a file or at
other times? Do you have any other virus programs running?

How are you opening these docs?, within eg Excel by file>open or double
clicking on the file?
Have you tried uninstalling whatever version of Norton you are runing, then
using the tool available on Norton/Symantec site to completely remove?
