changing signature, how to widen text

am i being stupid but the box we are allowed to change the signature in is so
small (why?) that when I try to put the text in the body of the e mail I want
to send, it is all squashed on the left, because that is how it looks in the
box, what can I do?

I had to think about what you are asking. Which program and version are you
using for your email?
