Cannot uninstall Office Enterprise 2007

I suddenly lost my icons showing that files are Word, Excel, etc...so I went
to uninstall form the retail disc and it tries to prepare the files but fails
and offers to send the error report. I try to "Change" and "Remove" in the
Control Panel...neither works. I cannot repair, uninstall, or reinstall from
the disc, and the Diagnostics program offered by MS for the Office 2007 says
there are "no" problems. I think I've exhausted all of my available options.
I have backed up my Outlook *.pst files to a safe location so I think I'm
ready to do what's necessary. Who can help me?

Whilst backing up data is allways wise, removing Office doesnt remove data
files
