All our user have Windows 2000 and Office 2003 installed and their profiles
and startmenu are redirected using GPO. All user (except administrators or
users with elevated rights) have their my places bar hidden from view and the
tools option to turn it back on is greyed out.
Does anyone know the GPO setting to make this option available to them?
I have the same problem... and the same conversation going on in Word
newsgroup. But this is actually an Office problem.
The subject of my question is: "My Places bar disappeared in Word 2003".
Check if starting Word or Excel in safe mode (press ctrl when starting)
enables the places bar.

This question was solved in the Word newsgroup. See the following link: it's
the way to remove the places bar. Follow the reverse process to enable the
bar, that is, find the key in the registry and delete it.
