Default Both Word and Outlook "shut down" error

I really need some help. A couple of weeks ago I downloaded an update for
Adobe (which I have since removed). Since that time my 2003 Word and Outlook
"shut down" while I'm using them. The error message I get says "Microsoft
Office Word has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for
the inconvenience." They do offer a "recover", but it's getting QUITE
frustrating as this is happening 40-50+ times per day! Does anyone know how
to fix this problem? If you can point me in the right direction it would be
MUCH appreciated! Thanks in advance.
