adding lines outside text box

I am trying to use a document with text and line numbers outside the text box
as a template for further documents with the same format. I need to keep the
line numbers, but when I delete the current text that's in the document, the
line numebrs come off, too?

Is there any way to clear the document of everything except the line numbers?

Create the line numbers in a text box placed in the header.
When the text box is created make sure to change the text
box properties so that Wrapping is turned off and Move
object with text is turned off. When you place the text box
on the page's header make sure your margin is within the
clear area so you don't type over the numbers which are in
the header.
